Message From the Founder, July 2008

Greetings,

We, at A Caring Hand, The Billy Esposito Foundation (ACH), would like to thank you for your support and dedication to bereaved children over the past year.  We want to thank you for raising enough funds at our sixth annual gala, Handing Our Children A Brighter Future, to keep the Bereavement Center open for a year!

Amazingly, one in five children will experience the death of a family member. With two million New York City children and an average of 156 deaths per day, that results in hundreds of bereaved children.  The repercussions of the death of a loved one at a young age are well-documented and shown to have a negative impact on a child's life and future happiness. Bereaved children are vulnerable to problems in school, difficulty with relationships, and psychiatric disorders later in life. Family and peer support meetings can reduce the long term consequences of child and family grief.

A dedicated group of volunteer and staff facilitators at A Caring Hand, The Billy Esposito Bereavement Center know that grieving children and families can feel alone and misunderstood at a time when they most need support. The center is a safe and loving environment they can visit to overcome the sense of isolation, cope with their sadness, and find people who care.

Warm regards,
Susan Esposito-Lombardo
