Meredith Golding is our
Volunteer
in the Spotlight. Meredith has been an exceptional presence in her
work with the A Caring Hand, Billy Esposito Bereavement Center and
truly exemplifies the qualities a Foundation looks for when working
with volunteers. We had a chance to catch up with Meredith this fall
and she filled us in, below, on her involvement with ACH and more.
After graduating from college, I moved to New York and actively
sought out a program that worked with bereaved children and I came
across A Caring Hand. I decided to get involved because this is a cause
I strongly believe in and something in which I felt I could do well. I
was also involved in a similar program after I lost my father at a very
young age and am able to recognize the strong benefits of children
being involved in a bereavement program. This is something I have
wanted to do for a long time and I was certainly inspired by my
mother. She is a big supporter of this cause and also facilitated a
bereavement support group where she worked with other adults whose
spouses had died.
As a volunteer for the bereavement center, I will work alongside a
mental health professional to co-facilitate a group. I feel
accomplished that we're on our way to opening a very successful center!
On a personal note, I am 24 years-old and I graduated from Smith
College in 2006 where I majored in Education & Child Studies and
Italian Studies. I worked in Smith College's early childhood education
program all through college as well as at an early childhood art
program in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Currently I am working at a public
relations firm in New York. On my free time, I enjoy playing tennis,
reading and traveling.
My best memory of working with ACH so far was getting to know all of
my fellow volunteers and listening to them talk about why they chose to
get involved. I loved hearing everyone's story. I plan to work hard to
provide a safe environment for families where they feel comfortable
talking, communicating thoughts and feelings, and even laughing! I
want to provide a space for them where they feel that all emotions are
okay and where they feel a sense of hope. I am so anxious to start!
If you are interested in volunteering at the center, contact Robin Goodman at 212-229-CARE (2273) or robingoodman@acaringhand.org.
