Lyndsey Osorio - Volunteer in the Spotlight - Summer, 2008

Summer, 2008

Event Committee Member Lyndsey Osorio discusses her involvement with A Caring Hand, The Billy Esposito Foundation

My mother passed away when I was eight and my father passed away exactly two years later, when I was ten years old. As an adult, I wanted to find an organization that offered help and support to children that had lost their parents. I found out about ACH through volunteer.com. Among all the different organizations that help bereaved children, ACH caught my eye.

Lyndsey OsorioAs an only child, I felt like I was the only one who had ever lost a parent. I never had anything like the Bereavement Center available to me and I would have loved to have been able to meet other children who had lost someone. I know that my grandparents, whom I owe so much to and who have raised me, would have also greatly benefited from being able to meet with other caregivers dealing with a loss.

My most memorable experience working with ACH is when I toured the Bereavement Center. It was just so amazing! I specifically remember the room for the little kids, where I would have been placed if I had somewhere to go when I lost my parents. It broke my heart to see this room but at the same time, I was so thankful that children now have somewhere to go and talk about their feelings and be with other kids who have been through a similar loss.
My role as a volunteer consists of attending committee meetings to discuss upcoming events and soliciting donations for the gala. This year, 16 of my guests attended and next year I am looking forward to doubling that amount. I would also love to get more involved with the children at the Bereavement Center.

On a personal note, I love to read, cook, and travel. I travel as much as possible and try to go somewhere new and exciting every year.  I graduated with a B.S. in Psychology from Penn State University and have a minor in Spanish. I studied abroad at the University of Salamanca in Spain for a semester.  This coming fall I will start my Masters in Human Resources Management and Development at New York University. I currently work as a Human Resources Generalist for a company called White Mountains Re Services.

If you are interested in volunteering at the center, contact Robin Goodman at 212-229-CARE (2273) or robingoodman@acaringhand.org. If you are interested in volunteering at our annual fundraising event, Handing Our Children A Brighter Future, please contact Cortney Smith at 646.278.6727 or cortney@poweredbyprofessionals.com.
